Maya Devi temple dates back to the 11th century. It is one of the three ancient temples of Haridwar that are still intact. The other two are- Narayana-Shilla and Bhairava temple. As per the mythology Lord shiva’s wife, Sati set herself on fire to avenge the insulting behaviour of her father towards her husband, Lord Shiva. When Lord Shiva came to know that Sati killed herself to keep his respect he was filled with fury. Lord Shiva undertook a tour of the universe carrying the dead body of Sati. During this tour, the various body parts of Sati fell at different places. It is believed that the naval and heart of Sati fell here where today the Maya Devi temple is standing.
